Why would you pay for magazines? You can get free subscriptions so many places! SwagBucks, My Coke Rewards, airline reward programs. Or at least earn points for them through FreeRide. Anything to save a few bucks!

what you should be doing

I have tried so many sites to make a few bucks online that I can't remember them all. The good ones last. These are the very best.

SwagBucks -- even if you aren't doing anything else online, you should be doing SwagBucks. Use it as your search engine and win a couple of SwagBucks every day. Get SwagCodes, do special offers, recycle your electronics, shop from their merchants, find referrals, get more SwagBucks. Redeem them for prizes--the most popular is the $5 Amazon giftcard, which goes for 45SB. I earn that every couple of weeks, and I'm not even trying hard. Wonderful, wonderful program.

ClixSense -- watch 30-second ads for 1¢ (sometimes more), make a little from your referrals, add up over your target amount and they send you a check in the mail. Stable, reliable, particularly great if you go Premium and get 40% or so more ads. I get 10 to 20 a day, checking regularly. I have made over $80 with ClixSense.

NeoBux -- watch ads, make 1¢ at a time. The fun thing about this one is that your first minimum payout is only $2.00. At least 4 ads a day, often more.

It's well into January, and I have not updated this poor thing in months! I got rather sidetracked into two jobs and, mostly, costuming a wonderful production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. The show came out really well, but now I am ready to turn my attention to making a few bucks.

I set my ClixSense minimum payment pretty high earlier this year so I could collect just before the wedding. It came to $59.45. I also passed the threshold at Hits4Pay and got $29.35. Here's a screenshot of the payout I chose from SquishyCash:
I have also cashed in for several $5 Amazon certificates from SwagBucks. We didn't come anywhere near paying for the whole shindig, but I did get several things from Amazon that we needed. Even a few bucks helps!

referrals are key

On pretty much all the sites that will earn you a few bucks, the real money is in referrals. An active downline makes a tremendous difference, and even a few lackadaisical clickers are better than none.

I've gotten a number of decent sign-ups by mentioning this blog in conversations on various discussion boards. Even more have come from blog visits that originated on LinkReferral. The most direct way to build a list though is GetRef. It's a good program, set up specifically to help build downlines. It takes a little work and a fair bit of patience, but for those willing to learn, it can do wonders.
